Wichita Flood-Prone Areas: What the Record Shows
Wichita has flooded from rivers and, more recently, from heavy rain that overwhelmed streets and basements. This page lists what the record shows, with a source for each item, and does not guess about your street. On 25 to 26 June 2026 the National Weather Service recorded a daily rainfall record of 5.31 inches at Wichita Eisenhower airport (S1).

Who This Page Is For
This page is for anyone in the Wichita area who wants to understand local flood history before or after water gets in. It does not tell you whether your address is in a flood zone. For that you need an official flood map and your insurer. See the FEMA Flood Map Service Center and the Sedgwick County flood and water damage resources. If water is in your home now, the number on this page is for active water damage in one of the Wichita ZIP codes listed near the bottom.

How Fast Wichita Flooding Can Happen
The two most recent events in the record were fast. In June 2026, 4 to 7 inches of rain fell in two to three hours across parts of the metro (S1), and a Flash Flood Emergency covered Wichita, Andover, Derby, Haysville and Mulvane (S11). In June 2025, flash flooding in east Wichita included the Kellogg and Hillside ramp, Bleckley and Edgemoor (S2). Short, heavy rain leaves little time. If you see water entering the house, the first hours are the cheapest time to act. Start with safety. More: the first 60 minutes checklist.
Mold After a Flood
Flooded buildings stay wet unless they are dried. Wet materials should be dried within 24 to 48 hours; if they are not dried in that time, assume mold growth (S9). For the full explanation, see mold after water damage.
Belongings in a Flood
Flood water is Category 3 water (S10), so most porous belongings that sit in it are lost. Hard items can usually be cleaned. Photograph everything before it is moved, and make a list. More: flood cleanup.
Flood Insurance Is Separate
Flood is generally not covered by a standard homeowners policy. Flood coverage is a separate policy (S7), often through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Basement water from groundwater seepage or a failed sump pump is a different question, because sewer or drain backup and sump pump failure usually need an endorsement. Where to Check Flood Risk for Your Address
We do not rate addresses. These are the places to check:
- Official flood maps. FEMA Flood Map Service Center, the official source for NFIP flood hazard maps.
- Sedgwick County flood resources. Sedgwick County flood and water damage resources (the county water and stormwater factsheet is in the sources, S6).
- National Weather Service Wichita. The event pages used here are S1 and S2.
- Your insurer or agent. Ask whether your address is in a mapped floodplain and what flood coverage costs. Floodplain status can affect whether flood coverage is required by a lender and what it costs — confirm both with your insurer or agent.
- Your own history. Ask neighbors or the previous owner if the basement has taken water before. Write down what you learn.
What Happens to a Home After a Flood
After a flood, porous materials that touched the water, such as carpet, pad, insulation and the lower sheet rock, are commonly removed. Concrete and framing can be cleaned and dried. A moisture reading decides what stays.
Rivers, Creeks and the Floodway
The record names these waterways:
- Arkansas River. Named in the NWS June 2026 report (S1).
- Cowskin Creek. On 25 to 26 June 2026 Cowskin Creek at 119th Street crested at minor flood stage (S1).
- The Wichita-Valley Center Floodway. Built in the 1950s (S6), often called the Big Ditch. The Wichita and Valley Center Local Protection Project was authorized in 1936, built in the 1950s, and protects about 49,000 acres (S5).
Our reading: the floodway was built to carry river water around the city. It does not control heavy rain runoff, groundwater seepage or plumbing failures. Basements in Wichita still flooded in June 2026, when basement apartments in west Wichita were evacuated (S1). Living in a city with flood control is not the same as having a dry basement.

What Flood Cleanup Costs
We have not found published Wichita restoration prices, so this site does not quote one. Flood water is Category 3 (S10). Vendor-cited 2026 national figures price Category 3 at about $7 to $7.50 per square foot, against about $3 to $4 for Category 1 and about $4 to $7 for Category 2 (S8). Quick answers about flooding in Wichita
Is Wichita prone to flooding?
Yes — the record shows recent flash floods. On 3 June 2025 flash flooding hit east Wichita (S2), and on 25 to 26 June 2026 Wichita recorded a daily rainfall record of 5.31 inches (S1). We do not rate individual addresses; check official flood maps and ask your insurer, starting at the FEMA Flood Map Service Center.
Does the Big Ditch protect Wichita from flooding?
The Wichita-Valley Center Floodway was built in the 1950s (S6), and the flood protection project it belongs to protects about 49,000 acres (S5). Our reading: a floodway moves river water and does not control rain runoff, seepage or plumbing failures. Basements still flooded in June 2026 (S1).
Which parts of Wichita flooded in June 2025?
The National Weather Service reported flash flooding in east Wichita, including the Kellogg and Hillside ramp, Bleckley and Edgemoor, and a motel reported a basement full of water (S2). This is the only area detail in the source; we do not list other neighborhoods without a source.
What happened in the June 2026 Wichita flash flood?
On 25 to 26 June 2026 the National Weather Service recorded 5.31 inches of rain at Wichita Eisenhower airport, a daily record, and 4 to 7 inches in two to three hours across parts of the metro. Basement apartments in west Wichita were evacuated, and Cowskin Creek at 119th Street reached minor flood stage (S1).
Is flood damage covered by homeowners insurance in Kansas?
Generally no. Flood is usually a separate policy (S7), often through the National Flood Insurance Program. Sewer or sump pump backup usually needs an added endorsement on a homeowners policy. Your policy wording decides.
Is my address in a flood zone?
We cannot say. Flood zone status depends on official maps and your exact address. Check the official flood map lookup, the Sedgwick County flood resources, and ask your insurer or agent. Do not rely on a general list of neighborhoods.
